As part of its community music project, our club has established the South Perth Lions Big Band.
This 17-piece community-based big band with singers has a mix of experienced professionals and up-and-coming musicians, including some who have graduated from the Lions Youth Music Program.
The Lions Big Band recreates the magical sounds of the swing era – and more! With a repertoire of over 300 pieces from big band classics such as Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller to rock, pop and Latin numbers by greats like Elvis Presley, Stevie Wonder, Abba and the Blues Brothers … we have it all!
Under the experienced direction of talented jazz musician Phil Hatton, the big band performs for dances, Lions events, festivals, fundraisers and public events such as the annual community Carols at Sunset. The band also plays several times a year for corporate events and private functions. Band members donate their services and all profits raised support the Youth Music Program and the community service of the South Perth Lions Club.
The band plays music for listening and dancing monthly from February to November on the fourth Friday of each month at the South Perth Community Centre (except for October, when the Community Centre is unavailable, and we often have a special dance evening elsewhere). The band also performs at other venues from time to time. Please check the News & Events page to see upcoming gigs.
The band is available for hire for corporate, Lions, and civic events.
