As part of its community music project, our club has established the South Perth Lions Big Band.

This is an outstanding group of 17 musicians plus three superb vocalists, together with their highly experienced director Phil Hatton. The band has been performing regularly for ballroom and swing dancing, weddings, private functions and corporate events for 18 years now. It has played for the Australian Institute of Dancing’s Annual Championships for the past three years, and been described as “probably Australia’s best ballroom dancing band”.

The band also plays for public events such as the annual community Carols at Sunset at the South Perth Foreshore, a major event attended by thousands. The musicians donate their services to raise money for  the community service of the South Perth Lions Club.

We have a library of more than 400 pieces, ranging from big band classics to rock and pop music by people such as Steve Wonder, the Beatles, Abba, Tina Turner, Neil Diamond, Earth Wind and Fire, Fleetwood Mac, Burt Bacharach, Amy Winehouse, Michael Buble and many more.

Upcoming Gigs

The band plays music for listening and dancing monthly from February to November on the fourth Friday of each month at the South Perth Community Centre. It also performs regularly at other venues, such as the Jazz Club of WA, the Pan Pacific Hotel, Ellington Jazz Club, Fremantle Jazz Club – check the News & Events page to see upcoming gigs.

Big Band for Hire

The band is available for hire for weddings, corporate, Lions, and civic events.
